It's now less than three weeks to our next event - the Churnet Valley Ramble

Back again by popular request this 2.5 mile walk is almost entirely on the level alongside the tranquil backwater of the Caldon Canal to our lunchtime stop at the Black Lion pub set in its idyllic valley location near Consall Forge and for those who wish to let the train take the strain, there is the option of a vintage steam train ride back to the starting point.

There are options to suit all preferences.

Option 1 : Walk from Froghall (starting 11:00 a.m.) to the Black Lion Inn at Consall (arrive approx. 12 noon). Have lunch at the pub, then take the train from Consall station back to Froghall. This leaves Consall at 14:31 and gets you back to Froghall at 14:38. This will be the most popular option with most participants.

Option 2 : As above but instead of taking the train back to Froghall after lunch, walk back by the same route.

Option 3 : For those who would like to do more of this delightful canal-side walk, why not walk on to Cheddleton (about 1 hour) after lunching at the Black Lion, and catch the 15:50 train from Cheddleton back to Froghall (arrive 16:08).

Option 4 : For those members with elderly or infirm dogs who would find the walking a bit too far but would still like to sample this most social of events, why not take the train both ways to and from Consall? The train leaves Froghall at 11:00 and arrives at Consall at 11:11. It is less than a ten minute stroll from the station to the Black Lion but why not visit the canal moorings and old kilns at Consall before arriving at the pub or walk back the short distance to Consall Forge lock? Meet up with the other walkers and have lunch, then take the train back from Consall to Froghall at 14:31.
